Walk By the Spirit Matthew Morken
Galatians 5:16-25
Gal 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
• The only way to conquer the flesh is to live by the Spirit.
Gal 5:17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
• Ephesians 6:10-18
Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
• Romans 7:4
• The law is pre-Christian
• The Holy Spirit is actively working/involved in your life as a believer
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
• What is/are works of the flesh?
• The works of the flesh are actions flowing from our fallen human nature and desires.
Gal 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
• Sorcery- witchcraft
• Enmity- a feeling or condition of hostility; hatred; ill will; animosity etc…
Gal 5:21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that
those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
• Strife- bitter conflict, discord, quarreling
• Orgies- wild, drunken, boisterous party
• The key phrase- those who do such things will NOT inherit the kingdom of God
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
• Fruit of the Spirit… if God has drawn you in, you will be this way because you are ruled by the Spirit.
Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
• We who are in the Spirit have crucified the desires of the flesh
• Romans 6:6
Gal 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
• The verb used here (walk) is not the same in the Greek as the one in verse 16. Verse 16 implies that the Spirit is working/active in your life. This verb means to fall in line with or to follow.
Gal 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another
